Lawn mowers and lawn tractors

Another important feature of yard care is the lawn mower, a basic element in almost every suburban household. This page brings you a wide overview of tractor and mower types available on the market, enabling you to make the best purchase suitable for your needs. For more information; you can checkout our selected lawn mower and lawn tractor web sites, good luck!

For choosing the lawn mower that will be most adequate for your needs, a few simple terms must be taken in consideration. First of all, how large is your lawn? Are there any narrow spots in your lawn that are too small for a big mower to reach? Where are you going to store the mower, do you have space for a big mower in your garage? Some mowers require a high level of maintenance and some need a steady gasoline supply, are you capable of providing those demands? And of course: what is the price range that you can afford? These and more, are some of the questions you must ask yourself in order make the suitable selection for your needs. To help you answer these questions we divided the lawn mower categories according to lawn size, mower type abilities, mower type demands and mower prices.

Reel mowers

The classic and most basic mower type is the reel mower, some companies have been manufacturing them for more than a hundred years with only a few slight changes. Reel mowers are a simple mechanical device with few razor-sharp blades and wheels attached to a rod handle.

Cheep, quiet, relatively safe and requiring only low maintenance, reel mowers will perfectly fit those of you who have a small lawn, low budget and don’t mind the physical work (it can even save you a visit to the gym). The down sides of reel mowers are there low quality performance and there lack of ability to deal with ruff weeds and tight ends.

Price range starting from: 100$.

Electric mowers

Electric push type mowers, which are highly recommended by environmental groups, are manufactured in two main versions; cord or cable connected mowers and battery rechargeable cordless mowers. Electric walk behind mowers are a great solution for people who have a small or medium size lawn and want to save the physical effort and time that the operating of reel mowers will usually require. Electric mowers give you the advantage of a quiet, environmental and neighbor friendly tool powered by an electrical engine that requires minimum maintenance.

Disadvantages of electrical powered mowers will come to notice when ruff weed is tackled, in this cases the relatively weak electrical engine may not be very efficient. Mowers attached to cords have a range limit of about a 100 feet from their connected dock. A limitation problem might also appear in the battery-charged mowers; in this case the battery may not be of sufficient capacity for you to mow all of the lawn. Yet another problem in cordless rechargeable mowers is their high weight due to the battery installed inside them.

Price range starting from: corded 125$; cordless 350$.

Hover mowers

Hoover mowers float on a cushion of air making them easy to control and maneuver. The lack of wheels in small hover versions

limits them in size and weight enabling you to carry them easily from place to place. Hovers will give you a satisfactory medium cut quality, however, they may be difficult to use in lawns with steep slopes. Most hover mowers have a narrow designed shape that may cause inconveniences when mowing a large lawn.

Price range starting from: 250$.

Gasoline powered mowers

Push or self-propelled mowers with petrol based engines offer you a combination of a reliable high power source (between 4 to 7 horse-power depending on motor type) that requires close care and maintenance. Petrol mowers are ideal for cutting thick or high grass types, dealing with difficult weed and covering vas lawn areas. The benefits of petrol mowers compared to electric mowers besides power availability is there non-dependency on available  electrical power source. Most models have a cutting span of 20 to 22 inches, a feature that saves time mowing lawn and means less laps will be needed to cover the lawn. Don’t forget that owning a gasoline mower also means getting familiar with terms like; changing spark plugs, cleaning air filters, draining oil and so on.

Price range starting from: 150$

Mower cutting modes

Gasoline mowers available on the market come in three different cutting modes; side-discharge, which scatters the cut grass along the mowing lane, bagging, an optional mode which collects the clippings in a removable bag. Another mode is mulching, which cuts and recuts clippings until there small enough to disappear into the grass.

Lawn tractors

For those of you who have very large lawns or want to save time and energy, a tractor is a must. Tractors can easily be used for other gardening chores like; towing attachable carts, clearing snow and   using other lawn care optional tools kits. A smaller but much more maneuverable version of the lawn tractor is called a riding mower, this mower even though less popular than the lawn tractor may be a better selection for yards that have hard to reach spots. Yet an even better choice, but a much more expensive one, is the tight-turning tractor, which was specially designed for maneuverability.

When buying a lawn tractor pay careful attention to the tool kit it arrives with, some deals offer only the basic tractor features and you will have to spend more money adding other options to them.

Price range starting from: 700$ to 4000$ depending on size and ability.
